Switching Microchip Feeder Brands: A Handover Checklist

Treat a different microchip feeder as a new setup, even if your cat already knows how to use the old one. Identification support, accessory fit, controls and lid movement can differ. Keep a dependable meal option available while you check the replacement.

This is a handover checklist rather than a brand ranking. If you are still comparing specifications, see our model comparison overview. The steps below apply once you have selected the equipment you want to introduce.

1. Write down what must carry over

Record the cat assigned to each station, the food served there, the usual portion and the current identification method. Also note the tasks your household depends on: prepared wet or dry meals, scheduled dispensing, app records or simple local access.

Check each required function against the new model. The current ePawDen microchip pet feeder controls access to food you put in the bowl. It does not dispense scheduled portions, refrigerate food or provide app-based intake records. Do not retire a function you need on the assumption that every microchip or RFID feeder includes it.

2. Recheck the identifier, not just the word RFID

A chip that works with one reader is not automatically supported by another. The microchip-capable ePawDen microchip pet feeder supports compatible 15-digit ISO FDX-B implants at 134.2 kHz. Unsupported 9- or 10-digit implants require a supported ePawDen tag instead. An RFID collar-tag-only model does not support implanted chips.

Use the compatibility checklist before changing equipment. A different feeder does not require a new implant when the existing implant is compatible; it requires checking and registering that supported identity according to the new instructions.

Do not assume a collar tag transfers between brands. ePawDen has not confirmed cross-brand tag compatibility. Use the supported tag for the exact model and check it before relying on access. A tag's similar appearance is not evidence of electronic compatibility.

3. Keep bowls and accessories matched to the model

Use the supplied or explicitly compatible bowl. A bowl that appears to fit may sit at a different height or interfere with the lid's path. Do not force an old bowl, rear cover or guard into a new unit.

The standard ePawDen microchip pet feeder includes a removable stainless steel bowl. Matching bowls, Side Guards and the Tilt Riser are listed separately where applicable. Check what your selected package already includes before ordering extras. Our accessory guide explains their separate purposes.

4. Set up fresh registrations before serving a dependent meal

Follow the manual supplied with the new model for charging, registration and training controls. Do not copy a button sequence or closing-time assumption from the old unit. Pairing records should not be assumed to transfer.

Work with one intended pet at a time, away from other animals and spare tags. After registration, watch the pet approach naturally, obtain access, eat and leave. A successful handheld test checks only part of that sequence.

5. Change equipment without changing everything else

Keep the food and feeding routine familiar where practical. Even an experienced cat may need time to accept a different frame or lid movement. Use our gradual introduction guide rather than assuming prior experience eliminates training.

Keep the old working arrangement or another protected feeding option available during the transition. Account for food across both arrangements so that a second bowl does not accidentally become an extra unrecorded allowance. If a previous unit has failed, use a supervised alternative while setting up the replacement.

6. Retire the old setup only after a complete check

  • The intended cat opens and uses the new unit comfortably over repeated meals.
  • Other pets do not interrupt or gain unintended access.
  • Everyone serving food knows the correct station and portion.
  • Charging, washing and backup feeding instructions are clear.
  • Any feature you relied on previously has an appropriate replacement or separate routine.

If the new arrangement is inconsistent, keep the backup in place and troubleshoot one issue at a time. Successful migration means a dependable everyday meal, not simply completing the pairing step.
